The RULER Approach to Social Emotional Learning
Recognizing emotions in self and others
Understanding the causes and consequences of emotions
Labeling emotions accurately
Expressing emotions appropriately
Regulating emotions effectively
The RULER approach is an evidence-based approach rooted in emotional intelligence theory and research. Researchers have long known that emotions influence everyday life from attention, memory, and learning to decision making and judgment, relationship quality, physical and mental health and everyday effectiveness. Research also shows that students with higher emotional intelligence have better attention and memory, higher academic performance, greater empathy and social skills, higher well being, better leadership skills, and decreased substance abuse. Classrooms rated higher in emotional intelligence prove to have more engaged learners, better quality relationships, more positive behavior and better academic performance. Emotional Intelligence can also have an impact on teachers by creating more positive emotions at school, less stress or burnout, and greater job satisfaction.
